Developing Competency to Manage Diversity. Contains a framework for defnining diversity competence and learning activities and case studies for use in teaching about diversity. ( Co-authored with Dr. Ruby Beale).

Cultural Diversity in Organizations: Theory, Research and Practice. Provides conceptual foundations for understanding the meaning and impact of diversity in the workplace. In the year after publication, this book was co-winner of the George R. Terry award of The National Academy of Management given to the book making the greatest contribution to the field of management.

Assessment Tools*

Change process assessment tool

This is a 30 item questionnaire used for measuring the extent to which the organization has in place a comprehensive process for achieving excellence in managing diversity.

Personal competence tool

This is a 25 item questionnaire designed to measure the extent to which individuals are enacting behaviors that support the development of diversity competence.

Diversity climate questionnaire

This is a comprehensive questionnaire that measures the quality of the climate for diversity based on the conceptual model in the award winning book, Cultural Diversity In Organizations. This tool has been used in more than 100 organizational units ( most with P & L responsibility). Comparison data is available for organizations in the top quartile on a core set of survey questions.

Evaluating Diversity Competence

Based on work with a recent consulting client, this tool provides a template for incorporating diversity competence in the performance appraisal process of firms.

Our work generally involves partnering with organizational leaders to develop and implement strategies for enhancing the hiring, retention and performance of people from diverse cultural ( national, gender, race, work discipline etc.) backgrounds. Specific activities with which we have many years of experience include:

  2. designing and implementing research projects using internal records & TCA assessment tools to better inform leaders about the climate for diversity in your firm
